Changes abound (Sort of)

Tue Jul 21, 2009, 7:52 PM
Well it hopefully won't be long now, but in due time I will no longer have Poser 5 on my computer, as I'll be getting Poser 7 fairly soon, having recently ordered it offa Amazon. It'll be extremely liberating considering Poser 5 is obviously outdated and the biggest issue it had was the considerable lack of multi-undo, which Poser 7 gladly supplies. Plus with it I'll be able to update some models of my characters (Considering Poser 5 won't let me use Victoria 4), something I've been hoping to experiment with. Of course with Poser 7, my computer will be undergoing an upgrade, namely replacing the C: drive with a vastly bigger one (18 gigs? Nuh-uh girlfriend, ain't gonna cut it). As it stands now, since the C: drive is fairly full, memory is a big issue, and using Blender is very taxing on it, it's like it's trying to drink peanut butter through a crazy straw.

On a different note, I got Guilty Gear: Accent Core Plus for the Wii today. *Insert high pitched squealing here*

I hate Gmax

Sun Apr 26, 2009, 1:01 AM
Yeah, so, that Witchking sword I've been working on, it's just about done. UV mapped and everything (I even modeled out the scrollwork in the crossguard, all thanks to Bryce 5). The fun thing though is this little curse of mine: Nearly ALWAYS, if I'm making a model for KOTOR or just because, there invariably will, at the end of the process, be a point where I have to screw around with the model several times for it to work. And you'll never guess what, it's held out with the Witchking's sword, but a little differently. See, Gmax is a great program, it's a stripped down version of Discreet's 3d Studio Max, still quite capable of modeling and what have you. But there is one thing they did that really makes it feel like they beat you with a spiked club: The character limit on the Maxscript listener. You can't select all of the text in the Listener, so you have to take it into a .txt file piece by piece, and if it's a detailed model like this one, it takes 50 thousand years for one to cut and paste all the crap the Listener churns out into a notepad file. This makes exporting a decidedly arduous process, which exporting a model shouldn't be. And don't get me started on how easy it is to screw up and pretty much doom the whole model file. I mean, I like Gmax, I've gotten quite familiar with it, it would just be so much easier if I didn't have to do this so manually. ~Sigh~

I should just model in Blender.

Testing it out

Thu Mar 12, 2009, 2:32 PM
Before I signed up to deviantArt I began testing a free modeling program I have called Blender (I'm sure there's a lot of you out there that know what I'm talking about) to see if I could start using it instead of Bryce 5 to do renders, cuz I've started to find Bryce kind of lacking in the render department. So I cracked into it and, after some trial and error (and poking around on the interblag), I finally figured out its interface, the right way to import a Poser model, and how to texture said model, and I made a test render of Nikita (A character who I'm yet to post images of.), and I was quite happy with the results, though since she was illuminated by only one light, it was kinda dark. But, I gave another shot today with four lights, and when I saw the result, the first thing that came to mind was "Daamn!". So sometime, I might post the two tests, probably after I introduce Nikita to the devArt scene.
